EUROPE TRIP: Engelberg, Switzerland- Mt. Titlis

Wednesday April 24, 2013:

We knew one day in the Swiss Alps wasn't enough so we planned on going to Engelberg.  When I was doing research for the trip and I saw the website for Mt. Titlis I said--we MUST go there!  Rochelle had never been, so we thought it would be a good adventure for all of us.  Engelberg means "Angel Mountain" and just the views from being down in the valley were gorgeous so we were hesitant if we wanted to spend the money to go up to the top, but I'm so glad we did.  It takes nearly 45 minutes to get to the top of Mt. Titlis.  We had to take several different ski lifts and then the last ride up was on a rotating 360 degree tram--the only one in the world!  Let me tell you, it is not for anyone with a weak stomach!!!  They pack you in so tight and you go up so quickly that a guy next to Nick passed out.  I wasn't feeling very well myself and told Nick  not to let go of my hand, but before I could finish the sentence he was helping this guy out who was slumped over.  Once at the top I had to sit for a few minutes to let the altitude sickness pass, but once I got adjusted I was okay.  It was about 30 degrees at the top with some wind, so we were sure to bring what we needed to bundle up, but I could not get the layers off fast enough---the sun was blazing down!!!  I was sweating so much and we all ended up getting totally sun burnt from being so close to the sun on such a clear day.

Once at the top they had an ice flyer, an ice glacier cave, and a suspension bridge to walk over.  It was great.  We took over 500 pictures up there!!!  The beauty was unreal.  There is nothing like looking down and seeing clouds and birds beneath you.  I would highly recommended seeing this once in your lifetime!

Rochelle, Liza, and I headed to buy our lift tickets to the top!
Us on one of the many lifts to get up to the peak

The valleys were so green next to the blue sky!
The path to the top!
This is a picture of us packed in to the rotating aerial tram.  Yes, there are snowboarders and skiers on here too because some of them were crazy enough to ride their boards the whole way down!  No way would I ever do that!

We stepped out of the tram to this view.  I couldn't let go of the railing yet because of the high altitude.
"We have reached 10,00 feet, it is now safe to use your portable electronics" now has a new meaning to me whenever I hear that on the plane!  Now, this is a view from 10,000 feet

Just gorgeous

Some areas had bars like this because the drop off was straight down from here.
Liza was so good in her carrier.  She even got in a great nap.

Love him...Love this view
This sign was at the top.  Very appropriate and humbling to read and look at the surroundings.  Only God could create this beauty.

I'm not going to lie, this bridge made me a little nervous

Someone was having a little fun

They had a cave you could go in that was formed by the glacier that made these mountains.  It was incredible to walk through there.

Back down in the valley we again were surrounded by just as much beauty.

I'm so glad we decided to go to the top of Mt. Titlis.  It was a last minute decision and worth every single expensive shiny penny :)  If you think I posted a lot of pictures here, there are about 480 more on my computer just of Mt. Titlis.
